Mother of Pearl |
Argentium is a silver alloy that contains a small amount of germanium, which gives it a higher tarnish resistance. Argentium has a silver purity of .935 while sterling is .925 and fine silver is the purest at .999, that is, 99.9% pure silver. Fine silver, being considerably softer than either sterling or argentium, is the flat wire used in the bezel to wrap around the shell.
Six bezels make up the necklace. They are soldered together and reinforced with wire on the back to make it rigid and strong.
A
sterling silver chain is attached and it clasps in front. The earrings
were cut from the same abalone shell and fit into bezels made in the
same way as the necklace. They dangle from a simple hand fashioned post.
Notice in the photo of the reverse side of the necklace that the backs
are not solid metal, but instead are wire rings shaped to match the
shells. The earrings are made the same way, ensuring that they are very
light weight.

Astounding color |
The
colors seen in these pieces are ever changing. The flashy gem-like
mother of pearl is highly iridescent and hypnotic. Changes in ambient
light and view angle completely alter the appearance of the shells. The
effect is quite breathtaking although it made it very hard to photograph
with justice. The set is guaranteed to delight and is sure to attract
admirers.
