Beefsteak Agate in Multi-Prong Copper and Brass Setting $50

Here is a circular, slightly domed polished cabochon of a stone that looks like beefsteak jasper, but it is translucent, so I shall call it beefsteak agate instead. My expert friends tell me translucency is what makes the difference between jaspers and agates, so I will trust them on that. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Anyway, this particular piece of agate started as a baseball sized chunk of rough rock. It was given to me by my good friend and fellow jewelry maker, Lucy Golden, who found it on one of her visits to Southern Utah. I slabbed, shaped, and polished the stone. I gave a slight bevel the edge. The finished stone was placed in a setting made of hammered copper wire and numerous brass prongs. The prongs are pressed against the bevel and hold the agate securely. After polishing, the metal parts were coated with a thin layer of lacquer. This prevents tarnish and keeps the copper wire from coming in direct contact with your skin. This lacquer treatment is also used on brass musical instruments to keep them looking bright and shiny.

The back is not solid metal as one might guess. The back side of the agate is visible. You can wear the pendant reversed for an interesting effect. One way shows all the pretty prongs. The other side shows the agate framed inside a hammered copper ring with no prongs.

The piece measures 1-7/16 inches in diameter and is about 1/4 inch in thickness (35mm x 6mm). The pendant hangs from a simple reddish brown cord that is fastened at the top by the loop and knot on the ends. You can very easily replace the cord with your own that is more decorative, or contact me about making a different cord with a wrapped wire hook and eye as is shown for several of my other pieces.

The top photo was taken in bright sun. I took the second photo indoors because I wanted to show the deep earthy red that is seen when the stone is in more subdued light.

I am very happy with the way this pendant turned out. I have several more pieces of this beautiful agate, and I would  be happy to make you matching stones for possibly, a ring, or different sized stones to add to a necklace or collar.
